Year 6

Dear Families

I hope you all had a fabulous break over the holidays. As usual, this term is going to be full of fun and exciting learning opportunities, it’s super busy.

At the end of last term, a form went out on QKR and Tiqbiz for our Public Speaking course. This will be starting in Week 3 on a Wednesday. It is a fabulous course no matter what level of confidence and skill your child has when speaking publicly. Remember that the course concludes with a Speech night which will be our Celebration of Learning for the term.

Please ensure you have signed the permission form and paid the fee so that your child can participate. If you wish your child not to participate, please let me know ASAP.

Our English unit this term will be looking at Narrative with a particular focus on gender stereotypes in fiction. We will be exploring a range of narratives, both old and new, pulling them apart as well as constructing our own. Please find attached the rubric for the main assessment task.

Mathematics this term has a major focus on the four processes – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be exploring different strategies as well as providing a range of activities that allow students to use their skills in a more practical manner. One of the key areas of focus will be worded problems and problem solving. This is an area many students find difficult, no matter their ability level and one that Secondary schools have suggested more emphasis be placed on in Year 6. I will email the major assessment task rubric later in the term as the task your child completes will vary depending on their ability and growth throughout the term.

This term the whole school focus for Inquiry is Sustainability. Our unit is called Think Global, Act Local. The students will consider how to sustain the environment, the society and the economy. Our students will look at their own actions on the sustainability of the world. They will understand how scientific and geographic thinking can impact on sustainable practices. They will be immersed in the work of geographers as they consider how the data that they collect helps to inform sustainable actions.

Part of our whole school sustainability unit will incorporate a whole school excursion. More information closer to the time.

Throughout Art this term will we be looking at modelling and 3-Dimensional works. We will look a variety of artists and work with mediums such as clay, wire and natural elements.

This term we will be going on a hike for Outdoor Ed. We will be hiking in Toolangi. Info will be coming out this week.

As always email, call or come in any time.

Yours sincerely

Justine Kolliou
